First:Â The Hidden Mall â a beginning of something
Previous:Â Stay Alive
Abby woke to find Old Liv staring at her from the entryway of the tent. Â âTrouble?â she mouthed. To either side of her, there was a Liv, sound asleep.
Liv-Old shook her head.  âJust⌠It always surprises me,â she murmurs, âhow young you are. But youâre younger than most of them, I think.  You havenât been in here long at all, have you?â
âNo.â Â Abby didnât want to wake up her Livs. Â She considered the way they were all laying and, after a moment, sat up slowly, and moved to the front of the tent, finding that she could sit cross-legged and keep one knee touching each of her Livs. âItâs still weird, sleeping in the mall, for me. Â But at least, uh. The robot people gave us a bath?â
Liv-Old snorted. Â âYeah. I went about a month without a bath during my first year or two because I was being squeamish. Â Same with food. After a while-â
Abby shuddered. Â âIâm sorry. Itâs just – youâve been here so long. Â And I know that youâve said, you keep saying youâre not her. Â Iâm not the Abby you came in with. But itâs like…. are we going to be here until we get old? Â What about school? What about everything?â
âSomeone has to break it. Â I donât know how, and I donât know what itâll do, but someone has to break it. Â If we donât, yeah. Iâm going to die of old age here. Iâm going to keep moving younger version of myself and my best friend through this place, helping out where I can, and Iâm going to be a skeleton warning away future versions of myself, some day.â
Abby shuddered. Â âNo. No, come with us, weâll figure it out-â
âNo. Â Iâm sorry, but no. Â I could, maybe, although three is a lot of Livs for any one Abby to carry, but the thing is – then who would keep an eye out for the next batch of kids? Â I know, itâs hard to think about it, but since I lost my Abby, all of you are equally important to me. You might be the one that cracks it – but you, sorry to say, might end up dying at the hands of, oh, I donât know, an angry robot that you donât have the sense to stay away from.â
âThey were everywhere!â Â She dropped her voice down to a whisper. Â âHow am I supposed to know a place is trying to kill me?â
âItâs a mall, isnât it? Â Rule of thumb, if it lives there, you donât fit in, and it wants to eliminate you. Â Your best bet, hands-down, is to avoid any place with people. Now, I donât know how that helps you end this thing, but, um, I have this.â Â
She pulled out a notebook from her pocket. Â In there, written in what looked like the same handwriting â Abbyâs handwriting â were several notes.
âOkay. Â So. The first one is âstay left. Â Always stay to the left.â The second one is âLivâs doors might get you to safety but they wonât get you out and theyâre more likely to get you weird.â Â Those arenât all that useful, but maybe theyâll tell you something. Â Oh, here. âGo up, and go left. Up and Left is the only way close to out.â Â Now, I donât know how useful thatâs going to be in the long run for you, but itâs something. Â Oh. Hereâs one more. âWherever you went in, thatâs the absolute last place you want to try again. Â Trust me.ââ
âI trust her. Â Urm. Did anyone sayââ
âHere, write it down.â Â Liv handed her the notebook and the pen. Â âIâve found you believe things more if theyâre in your own handwriting.â
Under Trust me, Abby wrote: Eat when you can, sleep when itâs safe. Donât turn down a bath. Â And hold on to Liv with both hands.
