Impasse, a drabble of Luke and Mystral

After Old School, after …Ninja…

::Luca!!::

Myst’s call ripped across Luke’s brain. He dropped everything. Everything, in this case, involved the …ninja… in his hands, and one of his swords.

He took to the air while still searching for Myst’s mind. Where, where…. he searched for heat signatures and found her very unique one. There… and her mind was unconscious. And someone was picking her up.

Luke swallowed the roar of anger only with centuries of discipline. Whoever they were, they weren’t expecting an air attack, even now. He swooped, grabbing both Myst and her attacker in one dive.

Only to find her attacker holding a wooden sword and aiming it at Luke’s throat.

He landed with a thump in Icarus’ tree fort. “Just back up nice and slowly. I’ll take the girl. You take the sword.”

He hadn’t Worked without words in a while, but he thought his Jasfe Tlacatl as strongly as he could at Mystral.

The ninja squinted at him, still pointing the sword at his throat. “Not till I get what I’m here for.”

Luke breathed as levelly as he could. He knew what a hawthorn wound to the windpipe could do. “What are you here for?”

The bastard laughed. “That would be telling.”

…Ninja… a drabble of Luke and Mystral

After X Marks the spot, after Partnership

Three. Four. There were more than he’d seen the first time. He disabled them, leaving them unconscious and unable to hold a weapon. One, who was sighting on his daughter’s room, he killed accidentally.

Anger. He took a few deep breaths.

::One more sweep on this side, and I think we’ll be clear. How’re you?:: Mystral’s mental voice settled him, called him.

::Almost done. I’ve got their lead… damn.::

He’d thought cyanide pills had gone out with the cold war.

He knocked the last one of his out, and grabbed the… ninja… before he could kill himself. ::This is not the evening I had planned, Myst. Do you want to help with the interrogation?:: He shook the … ninja.. and jammed his handkerchief between the man’s teeth. “Tempero tlacatl…” ::Watch out. They’re old-school::

He ducked as one that he’d missed tried to bean him with a crowbar. “Someone is going to die tonight!”

This was not what he’d had planned for this evening.

Partnership, a drabble of Luke & Mystral (@kissofjudas)

After Planning the Strirke, after Hunting Hawk, and so on.

::Tell me what and where I can strike, and not be in your way.::

There was more than one reason he loved this woman. Luke sent her the map again, gesturing in their minds. ::Over there. I’ll be over here, taking out the leader.::

He shut off the mind connection as he broke the man’s spine in three places. Even if she was a hunter herself, he didn’t need to share such things.

Old-fashioned, the memory of an ex-wife taunted him. He ignored her. She wasn’t important right now.

“Boss?” One of the men whispered. Breaking discipline already. Sloppy. “Count?”

“One.” Luke whispered it as he killed him. “Two.”

He left most of his half mostly-alive. He wanted questions answered.

::How goes?::

Hunting Hawk

After Some Nights and after Storm Front (now with 50% more ninjas.

::What should I do?::

::Intruders.:: He sent her the image of the property, the intruders, lying in wait. ::Get the kids into the basement. It’ll withstand just about everything. I’m going to land and take them by surprise while they’re waiting to take me by surprise.::

He circled twice more, muttering Intinn Workings under his breath, glad he always flew with an invisibility Mask. Had they seen him anyway? Why were they here? What were they?

::Where’s Seven? Over there. Over there. Where’s Six? Where’s six?::

::Ready to close. Where’s Five? Are we really doing this?::

::Team in place. Countdown. Twenty-nine. Twenty-eight.::

Him. Luke swooped down to the ground, silent death from above.

Some Nights, a drabble of Luke

After this and this, and on my side, this and this

He’d built the house closer to Addergoole than he liked, and not nearly close enough.

Close enough to be within its protections, close enough that he could visit – “visit” being part of the problem. But far enough away that Regine could never claim it as her own, that Mike could not easily stop in unannounced. Far enough away that he could not be there every night.

He had an obligation, after all.

After all this time he was beginning to wonder if it was time to pass the obligation on. Perhaps to one of his descendants.

Perhaps to Aodhfionn. That would be… interesting, to say the least.

For tonight, Doug had the fort, as it were. His Ana was around to help, if he needed it.

Luke’s wings spread wide the minute he stepped out of the school. The air, as always, felt like freedom, even if he, more than most, knew if for the lie it was, here.

Enough freedom to fly, at least. He leapt into the air and muttered a couple Meentik Workings to make the updraft he wanted. If he did this right, he could be home before dark.

And tonight, he wanted to be home quickly. There were some times that were meant for spending with loved ones.

He’d brought flowers. Flowers, and earrings. It was that sort of day, after all, and he’d been practicing making sapphire for a while now to get these right.

In centuries, you picked up a few useful skills.

The flowers – he’d had to buy those, he was no good at all with plants – died a quick death as he spotted someone near the perimeter of his property. The earrings were tucked into a pocket. There were people. Not one, but several people – he counted four, and muttered a Kwxe Working which gave him two more – surrounding his property.

Waiting.

He circled high above the land and muttered an Idu Working. Idu was by no means his best Word, but he could use it with effort. ::Myst. Trouble.:: He whispered it in her mind.

The List, a story of AU!Addergoole Second Generation

To [personal profile] rix_scaedu‘s commissioned continuation of Twin Study. This is non-canon, set sometime after the apoc, well into the second gen of Addergoole.
“I don’t get it.” The halls of their institution were painted a probably-supposed-to-be-calming blue; the floors were carpeted. It was nice, almost cozy, if you ignored the complete lack of exits and the prison atmosphere.

“What’s there to get? I mean, it’s pretty self-explanatory. List. Guys. Lather, rinse, repeat.” Fili pulled his list out of his pocket and looked at it. “I mean, if you don’t think about it, it’s pretty easy.”

“Easy for you to say. You don’t have to do anything except insert tab A into slot A.” Molly was staring at her list, but Ted didn’t think she’d seen anything on it.

She stared at her own. “Okay. So Albern isn’t too bad. And Gibson is kind of handsome, although he doesn’t talk a lot. But Davis is a flat-out creep, and Stonewall is… well, a stone wall. And I wouldn’t let Caledon touch me if he was the only guy on my list.”

“He’s on my list, too.” Molly stared at her list. “Nobody else in common, though. Unless you have Ether?”

“No. Lucky you, I kind of like him.”

“There’s nothing lucky about ‘choose one of these five to seven guys and have a child with them. Or else, cue ominous music.’”

“No. Maybe we could escape?”

“Shhhh.” Homer, who had been staring silently at his list, suddenly spoke up with a whispered urgency. “Shhh, they can hear you.”

“What, the Doctor?”

“No, worse. The demon. He has cameras everywhere. Sage told me.”

“Everywhere?” Ted crossed her arms over her chest. “That’s nuts. Really everywhere?”

“Everywhere that matters.” Luke was suddenly behind them. “You have nothing you need to hide from the Administration.”

“Uh, why don’t you let us decide that?” Ted stepped forward protectively, putting herself between the PE teacher and Molly.

“That decision has already been made.” His wings flared. “I’m sure you have somewhere to be.”

“Not really.” Fili stepped up next to Ted.

“We’re done with class, and we’ve had our meeting with Dr. Regine.” Fili held up his list, almost in Luke’s face. “See? We got our fuck-or-die list.”

“Nobody’s going to die.” The idea actually seemed to offend Luke. Ted wondered, a bit, why. It wasn’t as if he treated them like people. “And the good doctor has… ways. If you don’t want sex.”

Ted glanced down at her list again, and back at Luke. “You’re on my list.”

“Professor VanderLinden is on mine.” Homer had finally caught up with them. “So’s Professor Valerian.”

“I don’t have any Professors. Um. Although there is someone here I don’t know.”

Luke peered at Molly’s list. “That’s the goblin in the basement. He fathers very good children.”

“He… This is absurd.” Ted knew she was sputtering again. “You seriously expect us to just go have sex with someone we don’t know? Or, I don’t know, let them knock us up by artificial insemination?”

“There is a war going on, in case you haven’t noticed.” Luke’s voice never changed cadence, but his wings flared. “There is a war destroying your planet, and your race, and hundreds of millions of humans and Ellehemaei have died. Yes. Yes, I expect you to carry two children to term. And I expect you to show up to drill tomorrow at 8 a.m., regardless of if you have cramps.” His voice turned into a sneer and he glared over Ted’s shoulder at Molly.

Ted muscled her way a little more firmly in front of her friend. “This being on students’ lists things. Does it ever get you laid?”

“That’s not why I’m on there.” Good, she’d managed to offend him. Again.

“Then why? ‘Cause I wouldn’t sleep with you otherwise. And I figure most other students wouldn’t, either.”

“For the same reason everyone else is on your list: the Director and the Doctor believe that you’d make a good genetic match with those people.”

“Why not just clone?” The word tickled at the back of her mind. Clone. Clone. Twin?

“Cloning takes longer and doesn’t work as well as the old-fashioned way. Now, unless you’re going to invite me into your bed, go. Go talk to someone on your list, or something.”

“Why aren’t any of us on each other’s lists?”

Luke shrugged at them. “You got lucky, I guess. If you can be friends and still obey the rules, be friends. Not many people can.”

And that was a very weird thing to say. Ted glanced at her list, and then peered over her shoulder at Molly’s list. “Hey, Moll. I think one of mine and one of yours room together. Let’s go bother them. Come on, Fili, Homer.”

“Why are we coming?”

“Because we’re going to go talk to upperclassmen in their dorm. You’re coming along for protection.”

“Protection?” She thought Homer squeaked. Fili just laughed. “You think we’re going to be able to help?”

“Not really. Sorry. But I think the more people we have, the less likely we are to get jumped.”

“Well then.” Fili glanced at his list, and shook his head. “I still don’t believe this.”

Twin Study, an AU!Addergoole Second Gen

For wyld_dandelyon‘s prompt.

This is non-canon, set sometime after the apoc, well into the second gen of Addergoole

“Identical twins are nature’s clones, if you’ll forgive the whimsy.” Regine held a stethoscope to Ted’s chest.

“I don’t really want to forgive anything.” Ted pulled against the restraints holding her in the chair. “My parents…!”

“Shh. Almost done here, and then you can go back to your classes.”

“What’s this all about? Where’s Bill?”

She’d never know what her father had been thinking when he’d named them that. Then again, the guy in the chair next to her was Kirk, which was fine, but turned out his twin was named Picard.

“Your twin is completely safe and fine. She will attend Addergoole when you have finished your four years here.”

“So you’re going to keep us apart for eight years? What the hell?”

“It’s much easier to determine the effects of stressors when you have a control.”

“A control…”

It was Fili, on the other side of her, who figured it out. “Woah. You’re not… that’s sick. That’s Nazi Sick.”

“Godwin’s Law,” Ted warned reflexively.

“Godwin can suck it. She’s using our twins as a control group. How do you even use someone as a control group? I mean, things happen to people, right?”

“Not… like… comatose people.” Homer’s voice was quiet. “Dr. Regine… what did you do with Sampson?”

“Your twins are perfectly safe. You will meet them again when your four years in Addergoole are over. And now, of course, I must remove the memories of this conversation from you.”

“What about our parents?” Fili’s voice was small. “How can they be all right with this?”

“They can’t.” Ted sagged against her bonds. “But she’s already said she’s going to remove our memories…”

“You are all very smart children. I approve. Now hold still for another moment…”

Foundations, a drabble in response to many others.

Continuation Piece, Addergoole. After this, after this, and so on.

“I was a kid when I built my first house.”

Most of what Luke was doing was Workings. Pulling the stones out of the ground, stacking them without mortar so that they were one fused foundation. That first house still stood, actually. He visited it, when he was feeling maudlin.

“Maybe twenty? We’d just won the war, and I was feeling flush and full of myself. Very full of myself.” He’d been young and arrogant, back then. He liked to think they’d both mellowed with time. “And I was in love. She was human. I thought that made me a better person.”

He couldn’t look at Myst while he told this story. Anywhere but.

“I’d grown up with the idea that being away from fae was the way to do it. My mother joined a tribe of the People. Some of her friends slipped into the colonies and lived right alongside the colonists. You know, ‘living with the people.'” This time, he allowed himself a scornful face. They’d been arrogant, thinking they were slumming it. “So I married her. And we had a son together.”

He used the excuse of Working the stones properly to not say anything for a while. Over two centuries later. He shouldn’t still be ashamed. He shouldn’t still be hurt.

“She was human, I said. And she had a human lifespan. And he…” Luke shrugged, glad right now that he couldn’t see Myst’s face. “He was human, too. I didn’t know what to do.” It startled him that he could still shed tears, now, so much later, for the boy who had died so young. He pressed his face against the stone, and wondered if he was doing her a disservice, watering the foundation of their home with his old regrets.

Not Being stupid, a drabble in re. many drabbles

(Most recently this by Rion in response to this by me)

I always did well in history. Professors told me I was an eager student.

Luke was still chewing over that one – and trying hard, hard, not to imagine Mystral as Laurel’s eager student, what had Mike been doing to his head? – when she kissed him.

Luke had kissed Mystral before, of course. They had a daughter together, after all. But this… this was different.

And as the images in his head shifted like flip-cards from Mystral with Laurel to Mystral as she’d been in his bed, years ago, she dropped the bomb.

“I’d love you all the same.”

Luke’s wings flared widely, and his mouth opened and closed, but no sound came out.

That, that he hadn’t been expecting.

Liking him around? Yes. There were reasons to like a man like him, a Mara like him around. Even Mike thought he was decent company.

Wanting to live with him – well, they had a daughter together. And she liked his company, and the world had fallen to pieces.

But love.

Love.

His wings flapped. His mouth opened and closed.

Some day, Wil had said to him, you’ll be ready. And when you are, lovely man… don’t be stupid about it.

Maureen had said something similar to him, a few years back.

Mike said it all the time.

“This is me,” he informed Mystral carefully, “trying hard not to be stupid. Mystral… I love you.”

History, a drabble in response to a drabble in response to a dr….

Addergoole, year 39-ish. Luca Hunting-Hawk, Mike Linden-Blossom (VanderLinden). In response to this Addergoole bit by Rion, in response to this piece by me, in response to this piece by Rion.

“I have conditions.”

Luke supposed he shouldn’t have been surprised by that. He recognized the parallel. He recognized the tone of voice, too.

Shit, Mike, where are you when I need you?

He listened to her conditions with growing worry. He didn’t know how to be any more direct than he was being. He didn’t know how to say it to her, what he needed to say.

When she got to the end: “…that you won’t make me live in it alone. …At least some of the time,” his heart nearly broke. And he wanted to say, like some teenaged student, “well, duh.”

He coughed, instead. “I’ve only built houses twice before, Mystral. For the mothers of my first two sons.” Ké hadn’t let him build her a house. In this day and age, old man, we can buy an apartment just fine.

He kept talking, before he could convince himself to stop. “I wouldn’t build a house I didn’t plan to share. And I wouldn’t build a house for you without your input.” His wings flared. This wasn’t, yet, real. This couldn’t, yet, be real.

He met her eyes. “You have to remember that I come with history,” he warned her. “Those other two houses.”

And the women he’d built them for. And the sons, all three of his sons. He was very glad Chavva was a girl.
