If I were an ice cream cone…

To @dahob’s questions in response to this post this morning.: I have characters one through 23. Ask me something about them, or something about one or two or three of them!

Character number 9: If I were an ice cream cone. How would you eat me?
“Ahh…” Ahouva is not sure how to handle that one. “Quickly, I guess, so you wouldn’t get me all sticky.”

Character number 17, if you could be a fruit, what kind of fruit would you be and why?
Nilam laughs uncomfortably. “A fruit? Okay, that’s one thing I haven’t gotten accused of. I mean!” He blushes hotly. “Probably an apple, decently sweet, a bit tart, and I take a bit of work to chew on.”

And then [personal profile] rix_scaedu‘s:
How do 19, 5 and 11 get on?
Æowyn and Ciara are a bit cautious around each other; they’re very strong personalities and not immediate friends. Æo doesn’t really want anything to do with Gar, and, although he finds her cute and rather pleasant, he has that angry-man’s angry response to a girl who doesn’t warm up quickly to him.
Gar would probably get along fine with Ciara, and vice-versa, but Sylvia doesn’t really approve of Ciara, so they don’t have much chance to find out.

Countdown to Addergoole Year 9: Timora, Ceinwen, Noam, Gar

52 ?? days to 52 weeks

Timora
24.) What might your character’s ideal romantic partner be?
Timora wants a white knight. She wants a truly nice man who sees her for the lovely soul she is and doesn’t mind that she doesn’t look like the popular girls; she wants someone who wants long walks on the beach and gentle kisses and will rescue her and carry her off on his horse.

They read you Cinderella
You hoped it would come true
That one day your Prince Charming would come rescue you
http://www.elyrics.net/read/j/john-michael-montgomery-lyrics/i-can-love-you-like-that-lyrics.html

Failing a fairy tale, she wants a nice guy who likes spending time outdoors and won’t make fun of her.
Ceinwen
25.) Describe your character’s hands. Are they small, long, calloused, smooth, stubby?

Ceinwen had long, skinny hands with long, skinny fingers. Her hands are calloused across the palms, but her nails are always done and the tops of her hands are smooth.
Noam
26.) Second day of favorites!
Favorite comfort food: potato chips and French onion dip, washed down with Mountain Dew.
Favorite vice: skipping classes. Skipping anything.
Favorite outfit: his comfortable jeans and his worn-in Henley, both faded blue.
Favorite hot drink: He doesn’t like hot drinks. His favorite cold drink is anything sweet, the sugarier the better.
Favorite time of year: Summer, just after finals, when it still feels like you’re skipping school not being there.
Favorite holiday: Memorial Day, or anything that gets him out of classes, esp. anything with a picnic. Ice cream!

Garfunkle
27.) Pick two songs that describe your character at two different points of their life, and explain why you chose them.
As an angry, frustrated teenager who had trouble fitting in at school, the then-retro lyrics of Skid Row’s Slave to the Grind and Youth Gone Wild suited Gar well, as well as the just-as-angry Linkin Park’s In the End.

That song take on new meaning for him as he comes to Addergoole, as well as Hate Me by Blue October.

Countdown to Addergoole Year 9: Quintus, Speed, Wylie, Xanthia

52 15 Days To 52 Weeks

For the 52 days leading up to the 52 weeks of Addergoole: Year 9, I will be posting something Addergoole-related every day.

Today: More character development meme!

Quintus
20.) Does your character have any irrational fears?

Quintus does not like the dark, not one bit.

This is not totally an irrational fear. He had bad experiences as a child with the lights going out, times when his stepmother would crawl in bed with him, times when he’d be locked in his room with the lights out for hours. But this has translated into a straight fear of dark places, the lights being out, being trapped. He sleeps with the lights on at night, and with a flashlight by the bed.

(as a note: that stepmother only lasted a year, before his father found out. But it was a very stressful year.)

Speed
21.) What would your character’s cutie mark be?

Speed’s mark would be a length of chain, or, more likely, a tangle of chain.

He had tendencies in the BD/SM direction before he came to Addergoole – mostly curiosity and a very little bit of experimentation. He fell into being Kept by Gregori more easily than he’d like to admit, and, once Kept, it is not the bondage parts that he really objects to at all.

Wylie
22.) If your character could time travel, where would they go?
Wylie would go everywhere! He’s the sort of guy that would enjoy wandering around watching historical events. He’d bother himself at eight, and at eighty, and, once he learned they could live nigh-on-forever, he’d try a hundred and eight and eight hundred, too. He’d visit his ancestors, and George Washington, and The Severing, and possibly Neanderthal Man.

He’d try to pull a Bill & Ted and pick up a historical girl, too. Maybe try fathering his own ancestor, if he was a bit drunk or feeling very brave.

Chances are, he’d keep travelling until he was stopped or he died, though.

Xanthia
23.) Is your character superstitious?
Only in a completely atheistic non-superstitious manner; Xanthia believes that the world is as the world is, and that’s that.

Addergoole is going to come as a bit of a surprise to her. 😉

You can ask any of these four anything today!

Character Development Meme: Kendrew, Shang, Eluned, Pania

52 19 Days To 52 Weeks

For the 52 days leading up to the 52 weeks of Addergoole: Year 9, I will be posting something Addergoole-related every day.

Today: parts of a character development meme!

Kendrew
16.) Are there any blood relatives that your character is particularly close with, besides the immediate ones? Cousins, Uncles, Grandfathers, Aunts, et cetera. Are there any others that your character practically considers a blood relative?

Kendrew was raised by his father and his father’s partner, a man he considers to be a second father to him. He doesn’t know his mother at all, and frankly always assumed he was a sperm-donation surrogate pregnancy sort of thing (he wasn’t, but there was some Hugr and some Ambrus involved in his conception).

In addition to his fathers, he lived near his father’s parents, and was particularly close with his grandfather Joe, and with his father’s youngest sister Amelia. She acted as a mother figure to him when he was younger, and as a buddy and confidant as he got older.

His fathers have a younger daughter as well, Brynja, but the age difference is great enough that Kendrew finds her an annoyance, rather than a close relative.

He already has a son, but his fathers don’t know about that.

Shang
17.) What’s your character’s desk/workspace look like? Are they neat or messy?

Shang’s organizational style is “piles;” his piles are very tidy, but to an unaware observer, it looks like, well, piles of papers (and other things) all over his desk. His first week of Addergoole, he actually found the furniture storeroom to requisition a second desk, to give him more room to organize things. He has piles – often more than one – for each class.

His clothes, similarly, are sorted in hampers/milkcrates/coat trees.

Eluned
18.) Is your character a good cook? What’s their favorite recipe, whether they’re good or not? (Microwave mac-and-cheese applies.)

Luna knows three dishes when she comes to Addergoole – tuna-noodle casserole, rum cake, and chicken pot pie. She likes making these three quite a bit, though, and once she starts paying attention, as she’s encouraged to, she comes to realize that there’s building-out from all three of those recipes to be done, to more varied dishes.

Pania
19.) What’s your character’s preferred means of travel?

Adie likes trains. She really, really likes trains. On the other hand, she really, really, really hates airplanes, which explains why she’s a pale and nauseous mess when Wylie meets her at the airport.

She likes cars, too, enough to know the classics, but her real fascination is with trains. She collects accurate model trains but dreams of some day owning her own rail car, or maybe even her own rail line. She doesn’t know how to drive, yet, and really has no interest in learning.

These are all new characters to Ag Year 9; tonight, you can ask them anything.

Character Development Meme: Miryam, Llew, Nilam, Aeowyn

52 22 Days To 52 Weeks

For the 52 days leading up to the 52 weeks of Addergoole: Year 9, I will be posting something Addergoole-related every day.

Today: parts of a character development meme!

Miryam

12.) How is your character with technology? Super savvy, or way behind the times? Letters or email?
Miryam has a decent middle-of-the-way comfort zone with technology. She uses e-mail but can write letters; Addergoole’s field of slowing-down-communication encourages letter writing and she probably does send letters home. She has a computer and uses it, although she would need tech support if anything went majorly wrong. She can use all the basic home appliances, and doesn’t have a problem programming anything programmable, but prefers to let someone else handle

Llew
13) What does your character’s bed look like when he/she wakes up? Are the covers off on one side of the bed, are they all curled around a pillow, sprawled everywhere? In what position might they sleep?

Given his choice, Llew sleeps diagonally across the bed, in a rather still position that takes up the entire bed, or most of it. The covers, when he wakes are folded down halfway as he gets up, but long training by his mother means that he then folds them back up to the top.

He prefers to sleep with just a sheet and, in winter, a light blanket, so there’s not much to tidy anyway.

Nilam
14.) How does your character react to temperature changes such as extreme heat and cold?

Nilam does not like the heat. He prefers the world a comfortable sixty-six degrees; Addergoole is already a little warm for him. Much about seventy-two F and he begins getting very uncomfortable; summertime finds him inside, hibernating, hiding from the heat.

He’s not a big fan of winter, either; the snow and damp and cold make him miserable. He’s really a bit of a delicate flower, wilting or breaking depending on the extreme.

Æowyn
15.) Is your character an early morning bird or a night owl?
Æowyn is definitely a night sort. Mornings are not her thing, and she wakes up grumpy and unpleasant until she’s had breakfast, a shower, and at least half an hour of silence.

Nights are where she shines, and she often stays up late, going to bed in the wee hours of the night. She does her best thinking then, and often completes her homework this way.

Countdown to Addergoole Year 9: Ahouva, Ciara, Jovanna

52 33 Days To 52 Weeks

For the 52 days leading up to the 52 weeks of Addergoole: Year 9, I will be posting something Addergoole-related every day.

Today: parts of a character development meme!

Ahouva
9.) Who does your character trust?
Before Addergoole, Ahouva had a few friends she trusted well. She trusted her parents to a certain extent – they never directly betrayed her trust, but they were not all that reliable. And she trusted most people to be dishonest but non-malicious. Most importantly: she trusted her own beliefs, understanding, and perception above all else.
Before she is Kept, at Addergoole, Ahouva trusts her friends – Jovanna, Æowyn, Ceinwen. After she is Kept, Kendon begins a slow breakdown of those bonds, and uses the Bond to encourage her to trust him and distrust herself.
At the time of her chapter, she really doesn’t trust anyone at all.

Ciara
10.) Can you define a turning point in your character’s life? Multiples are acceptable.
The moment the man she believed to be her father left her and her mother. Ciara was seven, her older sister was nine, and her younger brother was three. Her mother fell to pieces, and Ciara and Soleil ended up taking care of everything by themselves.
By the time their mother was on her feet again, Ciara and Soleil had gotten used to being in charge, and their mother continued to rely on them more and more. When their mother remarried (Ciara was twelve); their “new dad” expected to get step-children in the deal. He didn’t expect small self-reliant spitfires.
The karate and dancing lessons were his way of apologizing and getting them out of the house and hoping they could learn to be kids, all in one. And they were another turning point for Ciara – and for Soleil, although she went in a different direction.
Convincing Luke to take her on as a Student was her most recent turning point.

Jovanna
11.) Is there an animal you equate with your character?
Despite the fact that Timora is the one with horse ears, Jovanna strikes me as very horsey, very storm-mare sort. She’s steady and calm until she’s not, and when she goes, she goes like the wind.

Maybe that’s a gazelle and not a horse.

Countdown to Addergoole Year 9: Garfunkle, Belfreja, and Kay

52 37 Days To 52 Weeks

For the 52 days leading up to the 52 weeks of Addergoole: Year 9, I will be posting something Addergoole-related every day.

Today: parts of a character development meme!

Garfunkle
7.) Is there one event or happening your character would like to erase from their past? Why?
When Gar was twelve, his (Step)mother’s brother came to live with them. His Uncle Jeremy was dying of liver failure, trying to stop drinking in a last-ditch attempt to save his own life, and he just couldn’t stop drinking.
The loss of self-control, and the loss of everything, in the long run, freaked Gar out. He had nightmares about his uncle flopped there on the couch, wasting away and still clutching the bottle. He still does. He said, at his uncle’s small and sad funeral, that he wished he’d never met Uncle Jeremy. His mother’s angry reaction to that cemented Gar’s desire to delete that event from his life
Belfreja
7.) Is there one event or happening your character would like to erase from their past? Why?
Bel is a generally very-friendly, sensual person, and, because she was an early bloomer and is a lush, beautiful girl, her friendliness has often been misinterpreted. In the last few years, she’s learned to moderate that, but before she did, a teacher, husband of another teacher, crossed the lines of propriety with her, looking first for a dance with her at a school function, and then for a kiss.
Although Bel, then fourteen, hadn’t been soliciting the attention, the teacher’s wife certainly thought she had and spent the remainder of the year angry at Bel and taking it out on her in her grades and discipline. What’s more, the principal, also a woman, sided with the teacher against Bel.
Kay
8.) Day of Favorites! What’s your character’s favorite ice cream flavor? Color? Song? Flower?
Kay likes Chocolate Mint ice cream.
Her favorite color is plum, with a second-favorite, accent, of slate blue (that’s purple and blue for guys)
“Youth of the Nation” is her favorite song. Irises are her favorite flower. When she plans her wedding with her friends, she imagines giant iris bouquets and her bridesmaids in long plum dresses.

Character Development Meme (morning Warmup), Questions 7 and 8

As discussed here and on LJ, I’m going to do this meme for a few characters (I’m rotating seasonal sibs to not totally overwhelm myself).

Questions 5 & 4 are here and on LJ.

7.) Is there one event or happening your character would like to erase from their past? Why?

Spring (well, really, all 4 RoundTree Siblings): Their father’s death. Dad RoundTree died when Mom was pregnant with Spring, leaving Winter as parental figure for his three little sisters (Mom’s not all that good at the parenting thing). The three that remember him miss him horribly, and Spring has always felt his loss.

Conrad: I’d have to say that what happened to Kai with Anatoliy wins here. He’s had a pretty easy life, even up to his first year of Addergoole

Rin: Hrm. This one is harder. Rin’s seen a number of deaths she couldn’t prevent, and handled any number of really unpleasant situations. I don’t think any one of those stands out to her, however.

8.) Day of Favorites! What’s your character’s favorite ice cream flavor? Color? Song? Flower?

Spring: Rocky Road, Green, “Hate Me,” Orchid
Summer: Chocolate, Pink (yes, really), the soundtrack to Rent, roses
Autumn: Maple Walnut, Red, Something loud and full of fiddles, and irises.
Winter: Vanilla, White (or blue), Mozart, Crocuses.

Rin: they don’t have ice cream. Her favorite colors are green and blue. She likes the marching songs, although she’ll rarely admit it, and she loves the snowblossoms that grown on the cold sides of the mountains.

Character Development Meme (morning Warmup), Questions 5 and 6

As discussed here and on LJ, I’m going to do this meme for a few characters (I’m rotating seasonal sibs to not totally overwhelm myself).

Questions 3 & 4 are here and on LJ.

Questions 7 & 8 are here and on LJ.

5.) What’s your character’s ranking on the KINSEY SCALE?

Spring: Varies depending on her mood
Summer: 3
Autumn: 2
Winter: 0

Conrad: I get the feeling about a low 1.

Rin: I’m really not certain. She’s not a very high sex-drive character any way you slice it, but probably about a 1-2.

6.) Describe your character’s happiest memory.

Winter: Winter being who he is, his happiest memory is one colored bittersweet. He was about five years old, sitting on the dock at the family cottage. The whole family was there: his parents, his mother’s mother, and his two little sisters. Autumn, about three then, was drawing pictures in the puddles of water on the dock. Summer was tiny, under a year old, and Winter was holding her in his arms, as he leaned against his father.

“Hold her carefully,” his dad murmured. “They’re a great responsibility, little sisters, and often great difficulty,” the latter as Summer tried to squirm out of his arms. “You have to know just how much to hold them, and when it’s time to let go.”

Conrad: (can I pick a memory in the future? No? Hrmm.) Everything right now for Conrad is covered by the bliss-bond of making his Keeper happy, but a memory from before the storyline…
… kicking a ball around the Village field with Cassidy and Vlad, the summer between years Four and Five. Just hanging out, not talking about anything all that important.

Rin: In a temple in an ocean-side city, her apprentice as a healer finished, she stood over her first solo patient, a woman of middling years who had injured her leg in a fishing accident. Slowly, patiently, Rin brought forth the energy, and coaxed the body to heal itself.

When she awoke, the grateful fisherwoman, generally an reserved type from an reserved group, hugged Rin tightly against her chest in thanks, and gifted her with a small, delicately-woven pendant of copper replicating a fishing net in miniature. She carries this pendant with her in her packs, only pulling it out for special occasions.

Character Development Meme (morning Warmup), Questions 3 and 4

As discussed here and on LJ, I’m going to do this meme for a few characters (I’m rotating seasonal sibs to not totally overwhelm myself).

Feel free to suggest another character, and I’ll work through them in rotation.

Question 2 here and on LJ.

Questions 5 and 6 are here and here on LJ.

3.) Name one scar your character has, and tell us where it came from. If they don’t have any, is there a reason?

Summer: Summer had an active, wild childhood, and, as such, has more than a few of those childhood scraped-knee and cut-hand scars. More notable is one across her collarbone, gotten when a piece of a set fell on her, nail-side down.

Conrad: most noticeable on Conrad is his nose, which was broken and not healed properly in his teens (soccer accident). He’s gotten in a few training scrapes since coming to Addergoole, but those heal scarless.

Rin: Rin is a healer. She bears no scars on her skin because she’s healed them all.

4.) How vain is your character? Do they find themselves attractive?

Autumn: Autumn is not a narcissist, but she’s a flirt, in a profession that encourages flirtation, and in subcultures that really encourage flirtation. She knows what she’d got, and she likes showing it off; she dresses to that end most of the time. Although she will not sacrifice practicality for vanity, she also won’t sacrifice vanity for practicality.

Conrad isn’t particularly vain. He knows he’s decent-looking, but in Addergoole that’s mostly a function of not getting a bad Change. No-one there is all that unattractive on base.

He attributes his skill with girls – Kai is certainly not his first girlfriend – more to social finesse and less to his appearance.

Rin: Rin has her mother’s nose, her grandmother’s hair, and a family chin. She exemplifies the royal phenotype, looking like a Callanthe and a royal. On some level, she knows this makes her look attractive, especially to other Callanthe, and she’s spent enough time in Bithrain to know that, there, this makes her exotic.

She takes enough care of her appearance to not let down what people expect of her as a healer, as a member of the army, or as a princess, depending on what role she’s filling at the moment.
