Patreon contents for patrons: Winter Photos and a November story

Winter 2011 pictures: We don’t have the snow this year, but I have some nice shots of a year that we did~

💦

Cetus had stopped struggling when one of them got an arm around his throat.

Before that point, he was pretty sure he’d broken someone’s ribs and someone else’s nose; dislocated three fingers on a grabbing hand and pulled out two handfuls of hair. He’d also twisted his own ankle and sprained his wrist, as well as getting a nasty gash on his forehead, but that was nothing. He’d done worse to himself falling down stairs, when he went through his clumsy phase.

Now on Patreon: Soup for Christmas (A recipe blog) and

🍜

I’ve mentioned a couple times that my parents are going vegan. For my mom, this isn’t all that much of a stretch – she’s been lackadaisically vegetarian my whole life – but for Dad, well, this is all new.

So I’ve been trying out vegan recipes for them. For the last three, four years we’ve been making Mom a jar of soup (I don’t know why Dad doesn’t like soup, I really don’t, but soup is for Mom & cake is for Dad), and then a dessert for Dad as part of our Christmas presents to them. Part of the gift is perfecting a recipe so Mom can make it later, if she likes it.

Available for all $7-and-up Patrons!

Now on Patreon: Day Twin, Night Twin (a repost) and Pull It (new fiction)

Originally posted Dec. 16, 2012. It’s not quite thresholds – but, as it turns out, I don’t have all that many stories about liminal spaces.

🌑

It happened once in a generation, or maybe twice – twins born on the cusp of the day, so that one was born to a sinister day, and one to a bright day. The one born to the sinister was taken away, to be raised by others born in the night-days. The one born to the bright-days lived in the light.

See, that’s the thing: It’s the lever on a Rube Goldberg machine, and you have to see the lever, pull the lever, and then not catch the cat before it eats the mouse six steps later.

The Snow War (A repost) and Taking Flight (A ficlet) for Patreon

Originally written in February 2012 for my In the City prompt call. Content warning: this is a war story, although only in the abstract.

They knew how to handle the snow, and their enemy did not.

So they stayed ensieged, locked in their city, feigning more distress than they felt…

Novemeber had a lot of, ah, false starts. So here’s another one, the beginning of the first story I started about flying.

Problem was, it’s sort of a nice setting image but it doesn’t want to go anywhere.

🐦

Taking flight hadn’t been the easy part; it’d been terrifying, horrible, and, for more than a couple minutes, Parastoo had been absolutely certain she was going to die.

But every child did it, dove from the next, caught the wind, spread their wings, and flew – or missed, and tumbled, climbed back up and tried it again. Every child had to fly, if they wanted to ever be an adult, if they ever wanted to really leave home.

Weekend with Project Expansion

//platform.twitter.com/widgets.jsI want to talk about project expansion.

You know, when you think you’re going to knit something and realize first you need to ball the yarn and find your needles (and lock the cat in the bathroom) and figure out this pattern and oh hey it’s bedtime.

Or you’re just going to put the trim on the door but it turns out the threshold and the inner frame need repairing and the door strike is a mess and… wait, where did the weekend go?

Or if you’re going to put the new trim up, you really ought to put a new coat of paint on the room and replace the light and insulate the ceiling and… oh. It’s November? Oops.

Or you just want to do a small test book to remember bookbinding, but wouldn’t it be awesome if there was a brand-new story in there and, hey, maybe it could be like those he said/she said flip-the-book-over YA romances, and do I need cover art and maybe I need to drive 2 hours to Syracuse for the nearest Dick Blick and while I’m there I should look at bathroom wall panels and a new chaise lounge and maybe go to Dinosaur BBQ… Maybe that’ll get done this spring.

You might get the feeling that I have a lot of experience with this concept. 😀

This weekend, I thought, “Hey, I should make an image for Patreon, to thank new patrons.”

“Hey, I’m not great at art, but I’ve been practicing these banner designs. I could do something with that…”

“…over a map! Not just any map, a newmap!”

“…Where are the split peas?”

“Well, if I’m going to all this trouble — hey, I need a new brown pen — I should really practice my lettering, or find something nice to trace, because my handwriting isn’t great.”

“So, I have a map, what’s this world about, anyway?”

…300 words of worldbuilding later, I have a new setting, a map outline (with scale!) and, uh, I need to do some practice lettering.

*cough*

…and figure out what to do about this world.

Patreon: The Expectant Wood, Chapter 7, and the first Trunk Story

The Expectant Wood is Back!

Nimbus tried to scramble further up the wall, but there was still no purchase, and even the window-slit sheared of prickers offered her no easy place to put her hands. “I don’t want to come with you! My parents are right up there,” she gestured. “I want to go with my parents.”

“Really, Quizzico? Seriously?”

Quizzico had no answer, so the Tigress looped a few vine-like ropes around the villain – not that Quizzico really counted as a villain, more like a nuisance prankster – and left him, thus trussed, in front of the Ninth Precinct station with a short note pinned to his costume.

Patreon News and a story – “Take the Sky”

I’ve redone the milestones and the donation tiers. There’s several new donation tiers at $3, $7, $10, and $15/month, including a peek into my trunk, a rifle through my recipe box, and access to my map case.

The milestones have changed to reflect the new tiers, too; the higher we get, the more recipes, the more trunk stories, the more maps you’ll get. I’m excited about the changes! I think it’ll be fun to broaden out the content here.

I hope you enjoyed the Christmas reposts. I think I’m going to try something like that – not every month, but when I can come up with a reasonable holiday theme. I’ve got content going back past 2008; even I’ve forgotten stuff from that long ago 🙂

Ashana stalked through the world, her big boots soundless but her stride seeming to suggest thunder, windstorms, danger; her leather jacket belted around her like armor, like a warning sign; her knives hidden but her sharp edges no less visible.

She scowled at the world, a quirked eyebrow the only threat she needed to make most of the time: wanna make something of it? Most people were wiser than to try.

Patreon: Thresholds and Liminal places; Laying the Foundation (repost)

The poll has spoken!

The theme for January is Thresholds and Liminal Spaces. For a $5/month pledge, you can leave all the prompts you want.

Doorways literal and figurative, steps into new lives, leaving beyond the old – it’s a good theme for a new year.

This was originally posted on February 15, 2012; it’s an early-ish story of Stranded world and it involves both thresholds and transitions.

“I think you should come hang out next weekend,” Calgary told Autumn, over the last beer of the last day of Faire. “Bifur, Bofur, and Bombur are building a house.”

“Seriously?” she raised an eyebrow. She was far too drunk to be polite when faced with that.

Calgary grinned, and quaffed her beer. “Three friends of mine, been together since college. Not Faire folk but fair folk, if you know what I mean…

Vexing Child, a story of the 4th Husband ‘Verse, available on Patreon

This is set in the same universe as Lady Taisiya’s Fourth Husband , a world where women are far more rare than men and most women have at least three husbands. Men co-raise their wife’s children (“egglings”), but there is a strict hierarchy within the household.

👗

“You are, without a doubt, the most difficult child I have ever had the misfortune to know.”

Pontlin was not Kivo’s shell-father — that was Yurnan, Lady Ruhinna’s most junior husband — but he was the senior husband and thus the senior father in the nursery, and he had taken a dislike to Kivo early. This wasn’t even the first time Kivo had heard this particular tirade this cycle, although Pontlin, who had wanted to be a performer, always added a certain twist to his lectures, a bit of dramatic flair.

“It is as if you look, specifically, for the most vexing thing you could do, and then try in some manner to make it more vexing…”
