This week on our 1870’s farmhouse, we’re demolishing the ceiling(s) of the bathroom!

The first thing to do was pull out all the old insulation – and junk – from the attic side.  After our homeowners (us) pulled out eight or nine garbage bags of old cellulose insulation…

It all began with the first of us, called, as was appropriate and due, the Alpha.

I never knew what other name the Alpha might have held, before this place, before Everything Else. But sometimes we called her Anna, or Angie, when we were being informal.

In the world of the Faerie Apocalypse – Addergoole, Doomsday, etc. – there is something that is colloquially called The Blindness of the Gods, and something called a Mask.

This week on What an Old House, we’re doing some exploratory demolition in our 1860’s farmhouse’s bathroom.

🏠

Now this bathroom has some interesting features right from the get-go. You can see from the photos that the entire bathroom was covered in these 50’s-era Masonite panels.

Set some years after the apocalypse.

🏖️

Jamian still loved the idea of summer vacation. The world had more or less fallen down around their ears; the resort towns were all boarded up, fallen down, or walled off into compounds; there was no office job to take a vacation from, no school to get the kids out of, and his kids were all out of the nest anyway.

As far as I can tell, this one is from June 2012, and it, too, is a little weird, but I like it. And it’s an exploration!

“That way lies madness.”

Althea’s father had loved to say that, teasing them with it: “Me do the dishes? That way lies madness,” commenting on current events with it, warning them off of bad choices in their teenage years.

It would be too easy to say it looked like an ordinary door.

The Sea Eats
a story for the Liminal Spaces prompt call.

The sea ate boats.

In the villages along the coast, they spoke of this solemnly: Harun-sha has taken another boat. Harun-sha must be very hungry today.

In the cities, they either spoke cynically of it: “this criminal population is getting out of hand. We need to send an exploration ship out,” or they spoke of it negligently, “Ha. Harun-sha must be tetchy today.”

Cetus had stopped struggling when one of them got an arm around his throat.

Before that point, he was pretty sure he’d broken someone’s ribs and someone else’s nose; dislocated three fingers on a grabbing hand and pulled out two handfuls of hair. He’d also twisted his own ankle and sprained his wrist, as well as getting a nasty gash on his forehead, but that was nothing. He’d done worse to himself falling down stairs, when he went through his clumsy phase.
